08/23/2010 The Kindred revolves around a family, and when you have a story about a family, the one constant, is food. My closest friends call me a “foodie”, but that just means I am enthusiastic about food and its preparation. I think I am much more than enthusiastic about food…I am madly, passionately, faithfully, head-over-heels in love with food. Previous relationships with boyfriends pale in comparison to my love affair with food. Never have I put a pot roast in a crock pot with onion soup and a beer, and come back to find it cheating on me after a few hours; it was always there, waiting for me…hot, moist, tender, and ready to comfort me over garlic mashed potatoes. The foods I reference in The Kindred are all MY recipes. Some simple, some complex, but all mine. Created from the heart and altered to suit whatever was available in my pantry. “Helen” woos “Bill” with several of my best dishes; from a Four-Cheese Baked Pasta topped with crispy pancetta, Grilled Pork Medallions with Balsamic glaze, and Herb Crusted chicken. “The Emperor” gathers the family in the kitchen with my ever popular Mozzarella and Parmesan Grilled Cheese sandwiches, with a tomato, basil and olive tapenade. Romance blossoms between two key characters over my Zucchini, Herb,& Tomato Stuffed Omelet and a plan to save the world is made over my best appetizers…Mini Mac’s, Cajun Halibut Cakes, Andouille & Corn Bread Stuffed Mushrooms, and Chili Cheese Turnovers. Mind you, when you read The Kindred, you will ask yourself about the recipes “Corson” steals…let me just say for the record that my choice of protein for said recipes is quite different…and legal…but the recipes are nonetheless, mine. Food in The Kindred is as much a character as the characters, just as food in a family, is like your next of kin. |
